AI Coach or Human Coach: What Each One Really Does for Your Marathon

GregGreg · UpGreg AI Coach 5 min read

Sixteen weeks, four or five runs a week, a long run that keeps growing: training for a marathon is mostly about sticking to a plan that constantly needs adjusting. The question is not “AI or human” but: who does what, and what do you really need?

What an AI coach does better

An AI coach reads every session you actually do: distance, pace, heart rate, duration. It recalculates your training load and adjusts the rest of the plan the same day. It never gets bored, never goes on holiday, and answers at 11 pm on a Tuesday.

Its real strength is consistent adjustment. A missed session, a busy week at work, a run that was too fast: the plan is rewritten instead of staying frozen.

What a human coach does better

  • Watching your stride, your posture, the way you suffer at the end of a race.
  • Sensing what you don't say: fatigue that comes from elsewhere, doubt before the race.
  • Being there on race day, in person or on the phone.

None of this goes through a watch. A good human coach who knows you remains irreplaceable.

How to choose

For most amateur runners training for a first or second marathon, the bulk of the work is a well-built, well-adjusted plan. An AI coach does that very well, for a fraction of the price of human coaching.

If you are chasing a tight time goal, coming back from injury or need close support, a human coach is worth the money. And the two are not mutually exclusive: some runners keep a human coach for the big decisions and an AI coach for day-to-day adjustment.

We compared the main apps on these criteria: which AI coaching app to train for a marathon. And for a realistic training duration: training for your first marathon.

🗣️ Greg's take

“I can write your plan and rewrite it after every run. I can't squeeze your shoulder at the start line. If you have someone for that, hold on to them.”
