TrainingPeaks alternatives: ask the right question first
TrainingPeaks is an endurance staple, for athletes and coaches alike. But on your own, you follow a plan written in advance that does not move when your week falls apart. Before looking for something “better”, ask what you are really missing: a fixed plan to follow, or a plan that is written and rewritten with you?
What TrainingPeaks does very well
Planning, sending workouts to your watch, tracking your training load: TrainingPeaks has done this seriously for years. Its store sells plans written by well-known coaches.
With a human coach, from $149 to $359 a month on its coached plans, it is an excellent tool for working as a pair.
Where it falls short when you train alone
- A purchased plan is fixed: one business trip or a bout of flu, and you have to rearrange everything by hand.
- You are the one interpreting your fitness, fatigue and freshness.
- Your bike, swim or strength sessions do not rewrite your running plan.

When to keep TrainingPeaks
If you have a human coach working with you on it, keep them: nothing replaces a good coach who knows you. And if a fixed plan suits you, the ones in its store are solid.
When to switch to an AI coach
- You train alone and spend Sunday evenings reorganising your week.
- Your schedule changes often: work, kids, fatigue.
- You do several sports and want one training load for all of them.
The other alternatives, honestly
- Intervals.icu: free and very complete for analysis, but you write the plan yourself.
- Final Surge: close to TrainingPeaks, designed for working with a coach.
- TriDot: a triathlon specialist, with algorithm-generated plans.
- Runna: excellent for running, and running only.

Frequently asked questions
Is UpGreg free?
Yes, the Starter plan is free, with no credit card. The Greg (€8/month) and Greg+ (€15/month) plans add automatic recalculation, more goals and chat with Greg.
Can I bring my training history?
Yes. You can import your .FIT, .GPX or .TCX files, and your recent activities come in from Apple Health or Health Connect.
Does my Garmin watch work with UpGreg?
Yes, through Apple Health or Health Connect from the mobile app: Garmin, Coros, Suunto, Polar and Amazfit watches already write there. A direct Garmin connection is coming soon.
Does an AI coach replace a human coach?
For writing and adapting a plan, often yes. For watching your stride or your swim technique, no. Greg will tell you so himself.
« TrainingPeaks is a superb training log. I am the one who writes in it, and rewrites it when your week goes sideways. And I won't tell you your long run went well if your heart rate says otherwise. »
